We have had a wonderful day! Every turn brings something exciting to see. Carol is the best tour guide a person could ask for. We started our day with sleeping in, 8:00 didn't use to be considered "sleeping in", oh for the days my body would let me sleep until noon! Breakfast and a quick check of our itinerary and we were out the door. Needless to say we are both pooped and ready to call it a night. Tomorrow we are off to Sturgis and beyond!

We drove through Spearfish Canyon on our way to Deadwood. Beautiful, the sign says "Black Hills National Park" |

Bridal Falls in the park |

A view that looked so much better in person but still magnificent. |

We made it to Deadwood |

For Wild Bill Hickok Days the main street was filled with fun activities. Our first event was a dog jumping contest. If you look at the picture very closely you can see a brown dog high in the sky. The trainer would make them sit at the end of a runway, signal them to come, throw their toy, and off the pups would go into the water to fetch it. Some of the dogs were jumping 20+ feet and others didn't want to get their toes wet. |
 |
I wonder if we can get Gunar to run and jump in the pond. It was unbelievable how excited most of the dogs were to get their ball or float toy. |

A club of miners had a booth set up so people could mine for gold. Carol and I decided that we would give it a try. First you bought a bag of dirt and then a miner took you to a trough of muddy water. You put half the dirt into a pan, stirred it around with your fingers then switched it until all the sand and small rocks washed out. The gold, garnets, and sapphires stayed on the bottom of the pan. |
 |
Here's my bounty. They really liked my speck of gold and my sapphire, so much so they took my picture to put on their website. LOL I should have asked them what that site was. |
 |
Our treasures were placed in a little bottle with clean water. The glass magnifies the contents to make it look like we had great treasures. |

The Oak Ridge Boys were performing this evening but because of the crowd, noise, and stormy looking sky, we decided to skip that part of the adventure but we did get to hear them set up and do sound checks. Not the Oak Ridge Boys but some other sound people. |
 |
On down the street we had the chance to earn a bit of money. I should have, the Casino up the street from this old brothel is now $50 richer, or I guess I am $50 poorer. |
 |
By this time we had worked up an appetite so the saloon where Wild Bill was shot sounded like the best place to eat. It was such an interesting place but we didn't pay the $10 to go to the lower level to see the actual spot where he held his dead man's hand. |
 |
Have a seat. I tried the horse but no picture allowed. LOL |

After a full day driving through beautiful canyons, up steep wondrous mountains, and being a true tourist we decided that it was time for a break. We took a bit of a breather back at the Best Western Spearfish Lodge, our home for the last to days and then closed the night by checking out the family Friday fun night in downtown Spearfish. It was a nice place to grab some food truck goodies, watch families enjoy each other, and listen to some good local bands. |
