Camping? Really?
I don't know how many of you realize that Doug and I bought a used RV from a nice couple in Redfield. Last October, 2016. To make a long story kinda short, we have never camped using it. In fact, up until the time we lost our minds with this crazy purchase we have never camped. My idea of roughing it has always been having to leave the hotel to go eat. But we got swept up in the moment and now own a very nice, older, heavier, pull behind RV. We parked it the day we brought it home and didn't move it until this April when it took us 2 hours to get it from our house to Adel for new tires.(This trip usually takes, at the most, 15 minutes.) The 2 hour delay meant we were late for our tire appointment which made us late for getting it to the RV place in DeSoto for its check-up. By the time we pulled into the Ketelsen RV parking lot, we had a flat tire on the pickup and they were closing for the night. We were lucky that they saw how frustrated we were so the four, very nice service guys changed our flat and helped us with the RV. Needless to say we were ready to put a for sale sign on the darn thing and call this a bust of an idea. But, a few days and $800 later, we pulled it home, parked it, cleaned it, bought stuff for it, and have never used it. We talk about it all the time but neither Doug nor I have any idea what we are doing so the idea of taking off with it in tow has us a little hesitant.
We were going to camp for a few days last week right by our house at the KOA campground. Nice place with lots of things for kids to do. It took a lot of talking and a plea from our friends, Ted and Kathy, to get Doug talked into it. He was so against only going a mile from home to spend money to sleep on a hard bed when the view from the campground is of our own house. Finally he agreed and we were all set but things beyond our control happened so we had to cancel. The plan is to try it again at a later date.
In the mean time, I have been exploring other places that are close to home. I have heard that Lake Anita is a good place so I decided to pack a quick picnic lunch and kidnap Doug on Wednesday to drive there just to check it out. It is very nice and will be a good place to spend a couple of days. So perhaps, some day, maybe this year, we will try out this camping thing. If you see a RV for sale listed on the Earlham Swap page you'll know it didn't work out very well.
The drive to Anita was fun, enjoying the scenery and getting lost due to road construction but after a fashion we made it there and back. We ran into this historical marker on our way. Did you know the first train robbery of the west was right north of Anita, Iowa?
